I want to know how the genome programs development.
I study this question in zebrafish using a combination of imaging, genetics, and molecular techniques. In particular I have developed an approach called in toto imaging that seeks to determine the complete lineage of organs by imaging and tracking all the cell movements and divisions that create the organ. I have developed software that creates a digital representation of the formation of organs at the cellular level. I am also creating a large collection of transgenic zebrafish to mark where and when proteins are expressed and localized on a genomic scale. These fish will be scanned in using in toto imaging to create a digital fish. I hope to use this digital fish to understand developmental processes at a programmatic level.
